The AI Money Machine Finally Turns On

The skeptics said AI was a money pit. A hype cycle. A trillion-dollar hallucination built on venture capital and vibes. This spring, tech's biggest names are proving them wrong — and doing it loudly.

Call it the software spring awakening. After 18 months of investors nervously watching AI infrastructure spending balloon with no clear revenue model in sight, the monetization tide has turned. Microsoft, Salesforce, Google, and a handful of mid-tier SaaS players all reported in Q1 that AI-integrated products are commanding premium pricing — and customers are paying it without much resistance.

The pattern is consistent: companies that embedded AI into existing workflows rather than launching standalone AI tools are winning. An add-on that charges $30/month on top of a tool people already depend on is an easy sell. A new AI-only product trying to displace five-year-old habits is not. The lesson the industry is finally internalizing — late, as always — is that AI is a feature accelerant, not a product category.

What changed? A few things converged. Model costs dropped sharply through 2025 as inference got dramatically cheaper. That compressed the gap between "what AI can do" and "what it costs to run." Meanwhile, enterprise buyers stopped asking "should we use AI?" and started asking "are we falling behind if we don't?" That psychological shift is worth more than any benchmark score.

The companies left scrambling are the ones that bet on novelty. The ones that built products around prompting interfaces and "chat with your data" demos that impressed at conferences but never stuck in daily workflows. Those demos closed pilots. They didn't close renewals.

The boring infrastructure play — quietly weaving AI into the stuff people do 40 hours a week — won. Turns out the most powerful AI application is making the spreadsheet slightly smarter. Nobody tweets about it, but everybody pays for it.

This isn't a declaration that AI solved everything. The hallucination problem is real, the liability questions are unresolved, and half the AI governance frameworks companies are publishing are performative theater. But as a pure market thesis — that AI spending would find a return — this spring is vindication. The money machine is turning. It just sounds less like a rocket ship and more like a very efficient factory.
